Trusting In Something Larger Than Yourself (Horse wisdom)

Episode description

This is a blogcast episode, an audio recording of the latest blog posted on Feathermane Soul. Now you can listen on the go, and this also makes the blog more accessible.

This week’s horse wisdom has me turning to the sacred herd to learn how to trust myself. Horses don’t question whether they do the right thing. They do what they feel they need to do for survival. They obey herd dynamics, but most of all they live in the now and learn from what they do. When we look to horses, or trust in something larger than ourselves, literally in this case, we can see the patterns in nature and know that we, too, can trust our own actions.

Horse Wisdom Blog.

0:27

Trusting in something larger than yourself.

0:30

Every day my horses tell me about the

0:32

power of trust.

0:33

Whether it's the rescue who lets me love

0:35

on her after being standoffish and skittish for

0:38

so long, or the senior heart horse who

0:40

calls for lunch knowing that I'll do whatever

0:42

it takes to make sure she's cared for.

0:45

The roly poly baby of the group, who's

0:47

12 by the way, lets me hug her

0:49

and give her all the attention just like

0:51

her daddy does.

0:52

And even the diva tolerates my attention and

0:54

is learning that she gets fed and treats

0:56

when the others do.

0:58

For those whose spiritual stories are marred by

1:00

trauma, learning to trust, especially in ourselves, can

1:03

be difficult.

1:05

Where horse wisdom and trust really come into

1:07

play is trusting that you're doing the right

1:10

thing.

1:11

Growing up undiagnosed nor divergent often means that

1:14

you're told, rightly or wrongly, that what you're

1:16

doing is wrong.

1:17

Often you're being told that it's because of

1:19

your behaviors, be they stimming or getting up

1:22

from your seat too much or whatever, are

1:24

seen as the wrong behaviors in the moment,

1:26

even when the behavior isn't hurting anyone.

1:30

As an adult, I fear being punished for

1:32

something as simple as taking five minutes to

1:34

myself or needing to decompress, and obviously that's

1:37

where the trauma and CPTSD come into play.

1:41

I lean on horse wisdom.

1:43

Watching the horses in the herd, there are

1:45

times when an interaction between the two of

1:46

them, such as the goofy gilding coming into

1:49

the pen when I'm about to feed my

1:50

senior heart horse, earns pinned ears and maybe

1:53

a glare.

1:54

But goofy gilding doesn't worry that he's doing

1:57

the wrong thing in the moment.

1:58

He's acting on his intuition and instincts.

2:01

I'm there, he might get fed, ergo he

2:03

goes into the shed.

2:05

He takes the reprimand in stride.

2:07

Hey, we can't all make perfect decisions all

2:09

the time.

2:10

The trick isn't not to make any decisions

2:13

at all.

2:13

It's to understand that the vast majority of

2:15

what we do will be the best decision

2:17

we can make, and no matter the outcome,

2:20

we're working with the best information we have

2:22

at the time.

2:24

Part of the difference here is that horses

2:26

live in the now.

2:27

They do learn from their past mistakes, but

2:29

they also learn from the things they've learned

2:31

in the past.

2:32

I recently moved where I feed Holly, the

2:34

rescue, and while she still goes and stands

2:37

down where her bucket used to be, after

2:40

just a few days I can call her

2:41

name and she looks and you can see

2:43

the process.

2:44

My food is up here now, she realizes,

2:46

and she comes towards the bucket.

2:49

Often she's standing in the right spot, just

2:52

impatient, and I take too long to get

2:54

the bucket to her, so she thinks it's

2:56

going back to the old spot.

2:57

It's not, I'm just slow moving these days.

3:00

There are a lot of what would someone

3:02

do memes going around, with some obvious ones

3:04

come to mind.

3:05

One question I'm starting to ask myself is

3:07

WWHD, or what would horses do?

3:10

You can insert nature, wildlife, or even a

3:13

specific animal in that if you want, but

3:16

in asking the question I'm aligning myself with

3:18

my wild spirit, and I'm moving beyond the

3:21

stories that I've been told, namely that everything

3:23

I do is wrong, and the more I

3:25

trust myself, the more I trust the horses,

3:27

the less those messages have a hold on

3:29

me.
